6.3 Problem Solving

SITUATION:

Dad plans to build a table in the yard. The surface of the table is in the shape of a regular hexagon and will be placed in an area measuring 2 meter long and 2 meter wide. How does the table size plan fit the area?

SOLUTION:

  • The surface of the table is an even hexagon.
  • Area measuring \(2\space\text{m}\space\times\space2\space\text{m}\).
  • What is the appropriate table size plan?

THINK HOW:

  • Draw an even hexagonal shape that does not exceed the length and width \(2\space\text{m}\).
  • There must be room for chairs around the table.

SOLVE:

CHECK:

Even hexagonal table surface:

  • there are six sides and vertices yes
  • all sides are the same length yes
  • size not more than \(2\space\text{m}\space\times\space2\space\text{m}\) yes
  • consider seat space yes
