Perimeter and Area

6.3 Perimeter and Area

We will learn to determine the perimeter of a polygon shape with up to eight sides.

Perimeter

Perimeter is the sum of the lengths of all sides of a closed two dimensional shape. (End of 2 or more lines meets the other end)
The standard symbol for perimeter in mathematics is the letter P.

EXAMPLE 1:
Perimeter of a square / cube:

The perimeter of the figure above is:
P = a + a + a + a or P = 4a

EXAMPLE 2:
Perimeter of a rectangle:

The perimeter of the figure above is:
P = a + b + a + b  or P = 2a + 2b

EXAMPLE 3:
Perimeter of an equilateral triangle.

The perimeter of an equilateral triangle is:

P = a + a + a or P = 3a
