EXAMPLE 1: There are 20 739 books in a library. In early February, 9 788 books were borrowed, and 5 714 were returned. How many books are still left?

SOLUTION:

Initial book count = 20 739 books

Total books borrowed = 9 788 books

Total books returned = 5 714 books

Operation: Substract, then add.

\(20\ 739-9\ 788+5\ 714=16\ 665\)

ANSWER: 16 665 books left

EXAMPLE 2: Total of 18 300 pencils has been produced by Afiq's Factory and divided equally among 25 schools. Calculate the number of pencils received by 11 schools.

SOLUTION:

Operation: Divide, then multiply.

\(\begin{array}{cr} &\,7\,3\,2 \\&2\,5)\overline{1\,8\,3\,0\,0} \\& -\underline{1\,7\,5}\;\;\;\;\;\\ & 8\,0\;\;\;\;\,\, \\ &-\underline{7\,5}\,\;\;\,\;\; \\ & 5\,0\;\;\,\\ & -\underline{5\,0}\;\;\, \\&0\;\;\\&-\underline{0} \;\;\end{array}\)

One school accepts 732 pencils.

\(732\times11=8\ 052\)

ANSWER: 8 052 pencils were received by 11 schools.
