Chapter 13: The Pythagoras Theorem

What you need to learn in this chapter

In this chapter, we will be learning about the Pythagoras Theorem. We will start by understanding what the hypotenuse of a right-angled triangle is and how to identify it. Then, we will explore the relationship between the sides of a right-angled triangle and how it relates to the Pythagoras Theorem. We will learn how to use this theorem to find the length of a side in a right-angled triangle.

Next, we will move on to the converse of the Pythagoras Theorem. We will learn how to determine if a triangle is a right-angled triangle using the converse of the theorem. We will also practice solving problems that involve using the converse of the Pythagoras Theorem. By the end of this chapter, we will be able to confidently apply the Pythagoras Theorem and its converse to solve various mathematical problems.

Topics in this chapter
1. The Pythagoras Theorem
What you will learn in this topic
  1. Identify and define the hypotenuse of a rightangled triangle.
  2. Determine the relationship between the sides of right-angled triangle. Hence, explain the Pythagoras Theorem by referring to the relationship.
  3. Determine the length of the unknown side of (i) a right-angled triangle. (ii) combined geometric shapes.
  4. Solve problems involving the Pythagoras Theorem.
2. The converse of Pythagoras Theorem
What you will learn in this topic
  1. Determine whether a triangle is a right-angled triangle and give justification based on the converse of the Pythagoras Theorem.
  2. Solve problems involving the converse of the Pythagoras Theorem.
