Energy Sector

4.2 Energy Sector

Social-scientific issues
  • Use of non-renewable energy
  • Use of fossil fuels that emit greenhouse gases

Examples of several socio-scientific issues that are related to the environment:
  • Deforestation
  • Global warming
  • Air polution
  • Indiscriminate waste disposal
  • Water pollution

Socio-scientific issues
Socio-scientific issues of burning of fossil fuels produce greenhouse gases that cause global warming and extreme climate changes.

Source of energy

Source of Energy

Non-renewable energy  Renewable energy

Examples: fossil fuels (petroleum, natural gas, coal), nuclear energy

Examples: Hydro, solar, wind, geothermal, wave

Disadvantages: supply become scarce and environmental pollution (carbon monoxide & carbon dioxide)

Advantages: clean energy, green energy, and pollution free

Application of green technology
  • Wind energy source replace fossil fuel in the future.
  • Hydro energy source become one of the main energy sources in the world to generate electricity.
  • Solar energy source has potential to be developed in Malaysia.
  • Geothermal energy source replace fossil fuel.
