The Mysterious Painting

When Sarah inherited her grandmother’s house, she hadn’t expected to find anything unusual. It was a countryside home with old furniture and memories stored away in each corner. But there was one thing that stood out  — a painting that hung on the wall in the living room. The painting depicted a woman in a flowing dress standing in a garden, looking back over her shoulder. It had always given Sarah a strange feeling, but she couldn’t explain why.

One evening, after a long day of cleaning and organizing, Sarah sat down in front of the painting with a cup of tea. She stared at the woman in the picture, wondering why it seemed so familiar. Then something unexpected happened The woman in the painting blinked. Sarah nearly dropped her cup. She nearly dropped her cup. She shook her head, telling herself she was tired. But then it happened again. This time, the woman in the painting turned her head slightly, as if looking directly at Sarah.

Frightened but intrigued, Sarah stepped closer. The woman’s eyes followed her. Panic surged through Sarah. She ran out of the room, but her curiosity soon pulled her back. She needed to understand what was happening. Sarah returned to the living room and stood in front of the painting once more.

“Who are you?” Sarah whispered aloud, feeling a little foolish. To her shock, the woman in the painting moved again, raising one hand as if to touch the frame. Sarah stumbled backwards, her heart racing.

Over the next few days, Sarah avoided the living room. She spent most of her time in the kitchen or her bedroom Yet, every time she glanced at the painting, the woman seemed to be waiting for her.

Finally, Sarah decided to confront the mystery. She did some research and discovered that the painting had been in the family for generations. It originally belonged to her great-grandmother, who was rumoured to have dabbled in the occult. The woman in the painting was said to have been a friend of her great-grandmother, a woman who mysteriously disappeared after the painting was finished.

Determined to get to the bottom of it, Sarah visited an art historian. The historian was fascinated by the painting and agreed to investigate its origins. After several days, he contacted Sarah with astonishing news. According to old records, the painting was something even stranger. The painting had been known to change. Over the years, different owners had reported seeing the woman move, her expression shift and even her clothing alter slightly. Sarah’s hands trembled as she listened to the historian’s findings. She couldn’t believe it. Was the woman in the painting trying to communicate? If so, what did she want? And why had her grandmother never mentioned anything about it?

One evening, after much thought, Sarah decided to face the painting once again. She stood in front of it, waiting. This time, when the woman turned her head, Sarah didn’t run. Instead, she spoke. “What do you want from me?”

The woman in the painting smiled a soft, eerie smile that sent chills down Sarah’s spine. Slowly, she raised her hand and pointed to a small keyhole at the bottom of the frame. Sarah hadn’t noticed it before. With trembling hands, she searched the house and found a small, old key that fit perfectly into the keyhole.

As she turned the key, the frame swung open like a door, revealing a hidden compartment. Inside was a letter, yellowed with age. Sarah unfolded it carefully and began to read. The letter was from her great-grandmother, warning her descendants about the woman in the painting — a woman who wasn’t as innocent as she seemed.

Questions 26 to 32

You are going to read an article about The Future of Transportation. Six sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences A to H the one that fits each gap (27 to 32). There are two extra sentences which you do not need to use.

Mark your answer on the separate sheet.

The Future of Transportation

Transportation plays a vital role in our lives, enabling the movement of people and goods across the world. However, the future of transportation is expected to look very different from today. (27) Many experts believe hat the way we travel will change dramatically over the next few decades due to technological advances, environmental concerns and changing consumer demands.

One major shift is the growing popularity of electric vehicles (EVs). (28) Governments across the globe are offering incentives for consumers to switch to EVs in an effort to reduce carbon emissions. Additionally, the cost of manufacturing electric cars is gradually decreasing, making them more affordable for the average person.

Apart from electric vehicles, autonomous or self-driving cars are also set to revolutionize the way we travel. (29) These vehicles can navigate roads with little or no human intervention, relying on advanced sensors and artificial intelligence. Many companies are testing these cars on public roads, and while there are still safety concerns to be addressed, the potential benefits are significant.

Public transportation systems are also evolving. In many cities, investments are being made to improve public transit options, making them more efficient and environmentally friendly. (30) Cities are building bike lanes, expanding metro systems, and introducing electric buses to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution. Another futuristic development in transportation is the concept of flying taxis or drones. Several companies are already working on prototypes for these flying vehicles, which are expected to provide quick and convenient transportation in urban areas. (31) This could drastically reduce travel times, especially in densely populated cities where road traffic is often a major issue.

Despite the excitement around these innovations, there are also challenges. The transition to a new era of transportation requires significant investment in infrastructure, including charging stations for electric cars and networks to support autonomous vehicles. (32) Nonetheless, with the right support from governments and businesses, these challenges can be overcome, and the future of transportation can be cleaner, safer, and more efficient.

Answer Choices:

A.   They are powered by batteries and do not produce harmful emissions like traditional gasoline vehicles.

B.   This new form of transportation will require new regulations and safety protocols.

D.   These projects aim to encourage people to use more sustainable means of transportation.

E.   The development of autonomous cars has advanced rapidly in recent years.

F.   However, much work was needed before flying taxis became a reality for everyday commuters.

G.   This shift is driven by the need to address climate change and improve sustainability.

H.   Without such support, it will be difficult for these technologies to become widely adopted.
